Conclusion of My PGC Phase

When I made a decision to study MA illustration in Nottingham Trent, I spent a lot and a lot of time to think about that. I choose here to study, one of the reason is my famous illustrator is come from Nottingham. I like this city, However compare with Newcastle (last year I was study my BA in Newcastle) I like Newcastle much more. Anyway I have the chance to study in UK; I guess I have to enjoy my life at Nottingham.

It is the end of this term; I cannot believe how fast the time goes by..! In fact I’m still trying to adapt the MA education, because when I study my BA in Newcastle, I just have to make some beautiful graphic for my submission. So In this term, I was quest struggled what my progress going. Fortunately MA GD classmate and tutors were helped me a lot. Every time when I finished a tutorial with my supervisor, I can more clearly what the next step I have to do. However I know I got a lot of things to improve. And I know something is really important to me how to get to the next level, that is English problem, I guess I have to spend more time to study my English. So in coming this Christmas holiday I’m panning to study more about academic writing, listening and speaking skill.

In my research project I have to improve my skills in research methods such as interviews and questionnaires. I think that is really related with my future doing. Anyway I should keep going on my project with more deeply research, and there still a long way to lead to the final production. Actually I’m really worry about I can get the pass or not. Hopefully everything well goanna be fine.

Creative outdoor advertising

I will set up the identity of the brand which will include the logo, a sample of a website and use my illustration/street art to create a fashion graphic, and also I will try to design a street art promotion to promote my street fashion brand. I thought I can use a street art to be a outdoor advertising, then promote my street fashion brand. Some great examples of creative outdoor advertising which show how advertisers are using different approaches to reach their audience. There has been a radical change in the outdoor advertising scenario both in terms of technology and innovation as well as the diversification of media spaces.

Case Study-Marc Ecko.

Marc Ecko, world wide urban clothing designer is without a doubt truly inspired by graffiti art. He stated out as a graffiti artist himself whilst at college, but then went on to design and creates hand made t-shirts. At his time, culture icon such as the likes of Chuck D. and Spike Lee started wearing his designs. He designs clothing for skate/extreme sport &hip hop, watches, bags, underwear and many more. He is now world renowned in his fashion and accessories.

Ecko has recently started a magazine called “Complex”, a new cosmetics line, and childrenswear. On his website, graffiti art is incorporated into all section of the site and his range. On the site, you can watch a video that shows artist creating graffiti, break dancing, snowboarding, skateboarding and BMX stunts. It also shows that a lot of extreme sports are actually endorsed by Marc Ecko. The music that plays on his website is that of hip hop nature. Marc Ecko said, “Graffiti is without question the most powerful art movement in recent history and has been a driving inspiration throughout my career.”

In April 2006, Marc Ecko hired a Boeing 747 plane, and painted half of it to look like Air Force One. He called in ad director Randy Krallman, and shot a video of himself breaking into what looked like the real airfield where Air Force One was kept. Ecko then released this video all across the World Wide Web, of himself applying graffiti to the left wing engine of ‘Air Force One’.

The video was a pure hoax, and was created in Marc Ecko’s words, "to induce you, the viewer of the video, to think critically about freedom of expression and speech and the government’s responses to the same.”

In the same year, Ecko supported seven young college students who filed a lawsuit against New York City, over its anti-graffiti law. This law banned anyone under the age of twenty-one from possessing any spray paint or broad-tipped markers. Obviously if you are under the age of twenty-one and you are studying art, this proves very difficult to carry out your work. In May 2006, District Judge George B. Daniels put a temporary injunction in place preventing City from enforcing that law. Judge Daniels said the legislation is “Like telling me I can eat an apple, but I can’t buy an apple, no one can sell me an apple and I can’t bring it to work for lunch.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/)

Postgraduate Lecture and Seminars with Simeon Farrar

I was really happy had a chance to talk with Simeon Farrar.
It was great to hear what the development he used. and how to use art into fashion.
Fine Art,Fashion and Graphics crossover, This topic are quite relate with my research project.
and he said "when you start to do your work, you have to really clearer what you going to do, otherwise you can't make it work."

Street Art or Graffit

“Street art is more about interacting with the street and the people, the masses. Graffiti isn’t so much about connecting with the masses: it’s about connecting with different crews, it’s an internal language, and it’s a secret language. Most graffiti you can’t even read, so it’s really contained within the cultures that understand it and does it. Street art is much more open. It’s an open society. “

Interview with Tatone

Hell O Monsters, Belgian collective formed by Blastus (Jérôme Meynen), Desro (François Dieltiens), Ewing 33 (Grégory Van Cleemput) and Tatone (Antoine Detaille). While studying art in Belgium the members of Hell’O Monsters adopted the vocabulary of graffiti: pseudonyms, the use of the wall and an emphasis on individual and spontaneous style.

I through facebook to contacted an artist from Hell O Monsters" his name is "Antoine Detaille (Tatone)". In our conversation in facebook, I asked him some questions.

1. What is your background, your studies?

He used to study art in "carrée des arts" in Mons.

2.What kind of technique you useally use?

Useally he use Stickers, sprays, markers, acrylic for painting and walls and chinese ink for paper illustration, illustrator and 3D software, stones, paper,scissors...

3.What is your message/goal in Hell’O Monsters works?

In the Hell’O Monsters works, they used to comment on the duality of the human nature. and we will often find opposites like the human and the inhuman, the life and the dead, the organic and the spiritual, the serious and the burlesque, the religious and the iconoclast in the Hell’O Monsters works.

What is your opinion about the street art in Belgium?

He don't have an opinion about it, he had less and less afinity with that technique. Howeven he still connected to a lot of people in the graffiti milieu.

Do you think street art relate with hip hop culture?

He said No and he thought most of the street artist aren't b-boys.

FRENCH VOGUE, NOVEMBER ISSUE

French Vogue’s November issue is one of the most bold spreads presented thus far. Titled “Graff- Couture,” two different lifestyles intersect where colorful graffiti murals are juxtaposed against clean, glammed up designs, featuring styles from Givenchy, Atelier Versace, Dior and Valentino. Graff artist KAWS was invited by named photographer Mario Sorrenti to illustrate tags, pieces and lettering as a backdrop to the exclusive, Parisian community of haute couture. Interestingly, the two came together quite match.
while ’street’ culture is known for its gritty realities of, well, street life and ‘high-end’ fashion is recognized for its superficial givings, the dichotomous worlds melded together beautifully.

Gregory Jacbsen a.k.a Fatty Jubbo he is powerfully creative, prolific painter and performance artist, musician and DJ living in Chicago Illinois. His art works used to paints and draws some really pervo stuff. It sort of feels like he's laughing at all of us. In fact, His works gave me a lot of impact to create my illustration.

Painted in Nottingham/

Finally, I printed in Nottingham.

the weater was extremely cold, I almost spent 4hours to finish this work.
anyway, I met few artists in this painting day.
It was a good opportunity for me to met some of the graffiti writers in nottingham.

The Backwards

Hell'o Monsthell'o monsters tool over the Kartel shop in Brussels.

for the website of the shop

Background – What do you think is the background, which has informed this work?
(Market, Competition etc)

Kartell is an Italian company that makes and sells plastic contemporary furniture. The company, headquartered in Milan, and they invited “Hell’O Monsters” to design thire window display.
Hell’O Monsters is a collective monster made of four heads.
Desro, Blastus, Erwing33 and Tatone are Brussels based street artists/ graphic designers
each of them has a different style or technique but their strength is that they mix really well together.
They used to work on walls, paper or any other thing that can let place to their ‘monster based’ imagination but they also do sculptures sometimes.

Audience and context – Who do you believe is the target audience?

The main target could be some one interests about street art, illustration and graphic design thing, also of course some one who appreciates the contemporary furniture. The age of the target audiences could be people between the ages of 28-60.

What is the context for this piece of communication?

The illustration of the window display title is “The Human Trouble with Dream”, so “Hell' o Monsters” created an illustration about some people/monsters are quite struggle to living in the same area. I thought they want to though the illustration to say life is not easy, so we have to raise our life style than enjoy our life. Obviously Kartell want to attract younger people to buy their products, that why they used illustration for the window display.

3) Executional guidelines – Describe the key words (mood, personality or visual qualities etc) that has informed this work? What are the materials, techniques and processes used to create this piece of communication?

Keywords: Street art, Passion, human nature, lovely, Contemplating
Inspiration: Keith Harring, Blu, graffiti, human nature

This Illustration was creating with hand drawing illustration then used spray filled the colors.

If you were commissioned to design this work yourself – what are the stages in the research and design process you would use?

  • Research processes
-Find the background of the company. Investigate the target audience.
-Look over the previous and other visual works of the contemporary furniture.
-Find out the company’s brand identity.
-Consider some of the illustrators worked for the wall painting.
-Investigate the illustration’s tactic for the wall painting.
  • Design processes
-Draw the illustration for the main concept.
-Find the information about the size of the location.
-Consider what kind of materials will go to use for the painting.
-Consider the best colors are match with the company’s brand identity.

How might these processes relate to your own research?

I want to create my own street fashion brand, and I will go to use street art for the brand promotion, so this quite relates to my own research. I think “Hell'o Monsthell'o” doing the seemlier thing with my project; they are also trying to use their illustration/street art to promote their works or some company, “Hell'o Monsthell'o” is a good case studies which connect with my personal project.

Design Process Project/19/10/09

*What have you learnt from this session – to improve your idea development for this brief?

It was great an experience to me and learned how to solve out a problem in the design process. And some of my classmate gave me a lot of comments to help me how to develop a new idea.

I picked “I-pod” for my topic that I thought this product changed the world. But when I finished a discussion with peter and Stuart, I found out I’m going to the worth wrong direction.  Which I have to decide a new topic for this project as soon as problem otherwise I have no time to find a research and develop my new ideas. Hope Everything Is Going To Be Fine.

*What have you learnt from this session – to apply to your MA research project?

I learned before when I start to decide a topic of the project, I have to completely understand what is the project demanded. Than I have to do ample research to make sure I can understand what the audiences need. I thought when I finish this project I will be more mature to handle the idea development. My process is not really fine right now however I guess I got a good experience to apply to my MA research project.

Dear Jimson

Looking at your blog this evening I am concerned about the very small number of posts you’ve made since the beginning of term.

You should be posting to your blog on a regular basis, at least once a week and we are now in week 9 of the term.

Currently your blog doesn’t constitute a learning journal, an account of your learning across the PGC phase, and as I’ve mentioned, this is a requirement to pass at PGC assessment.

Could I suggest you rectify this pretty quickly? The hand in deadline is only a couple of weeks away

Please see your supervisor or me if there is anything you feel we should be aware of - thanks

Best wishes
Stuart

Design Process Project/09/10/09

*What have you learnt from this session - to improve your idea development for this brief?
From this session, I found out if you want to create a successful illustration or though illustration to let's people more understanding about your idea; you have to put some of the massages or concepts behind on your artwork. And also from this session, I learnt how to share my idea or concept with other classmates, because usually I would like to work individually. However I was quite enjoyed discussed with my group mate, because I got some different point of view from them, and they gave a lot of impact to me than keep going to develop my own concept.

*What have you learnt from this session – to apply to your MA research project?
From this session I learnt how to provide an attitude or style relate with a concept, than bass on the result to create an illustration, concretely, I could more clearly to used the "visual" to "communicated" with the audiences. In my MA research project, my illustration will pay close attention to ‘extreme’ audience such as children or the elderly to accept my works. Which I had a good opportunity for me to practiced my thinking skills.
*Is the design process discussed this morning different / similar to your previous experience, and if so, how?
Actually it was quite different to my previous experience, because my group mate all of them are extremely concentrated in to the discussion. Some kind of outcomes were unexpected for me. I guess because of we are come from different countries, and we are not really close with each other so we
didn't spent anytime for some usual talk.
